Charcoal, Pastel, Color Pencil

Biography

I began drawing faces incessantly at age five, but it wasn’t until I studied art in college that I was able to develop style and technique.  While my art classes provided instruction in all media and in most types of art, I found my greatest talent was in using charcoal.

Mainly using the technique I learned in college, I only “line” draw initially to position my subject matter on the paper for correct size and placement.   Then I begin applying charcoal, layering and blending, until I am pleased with the results.  A kneaded eraser is used to create my highlights.

Although nature, animals and buildings are included in my subject matter, I must admit I feel as if something magical happens when I draw people.  Many individuals have expressed surprised emotion when viewing my work for the first time, and it has been said that my work not only captures the likeness of my subject, but it also captures the essence or the soul.

My art instructor once said, “If you want your work to look like a photograph, use a camera,” and I really do strive to remember his words.  Nevertheless, I still feel a deep sense of accomplishment when my drawings appear photo-like.  Thus, the best description of my work would be “photo realistic”.
